ICDS | Co-Hire Retreat & Leadership Transition

Delighted to participate in the Penn State Institute for Computational and Data Sciences (ICDS) co-hire retreat, a semiannual, university-wide interdisciplinary gathering. ICDS’s mission is to marshall interdisciplinary, cyber-enabled research to help solve problems of scientific and societal importance.

We also marked a transition point in ICDS Director Jenni Evans’ remarkable career. A luminary in the world of meteorology and atmospheric science, Jenni’s eight years at ICDS’s helm saw unprecedented growth, achievement, and community building. We welcomed her successor interim director Guido Cervone and associate director Christelle Wauthier.

Profiles in Leadership | Georgetown Law Dean William Treanor

Delighted to sit down with Georgetown University Law Center Dean William M. Treanor for this episode of Penn State Dickinson Law’s “Profiles in Leadership” series.

Our conversation began with the topic of “Intentionality in Physical Space.” Dean Treanor shared his vision for creating environments that do more than accommodate; they inspire. In “Building Community,” we discuss how community isn’t just about bringing people together; it’s about ensuring everyone feels valued and heard. “Keeping a Finger on the Pulse” highlighted his proactive approach to navigating challenges and opportunities.

“Bringing the DC Community into Georgetown Law” showcased the symbiotic relationship between the Law Center and the wider community. “Cross-Disciplinary Courses and Research; Promoting Public Service” reflected the innovative strides Georgetown Law has taken on interdisciplinary learning and law as a means to achieve justice.

Reflecting on his “Three Terms of Deaning at Georgetown Law,” Dean Treanor recounted the milestones of his tenure. “Avoiding Controversies; Keeping the Community Together” offered a peek into the challenges of leadership during a time of explosive social and political sensitivities. “What Does ‘Executive Vice-President’ Mean?” was an interesting discussion of organizational authority at Georgetown that I have not seen anywhere else.

Our conversation on “Teaching and Scholarship” and “Fathers of the Constitution: Triumph, Tragedy, and the Creation of the American Republic” allowed us to explore the theme of “dean as scholar.” Ending on a lighter note, “Life Outside the Law” revealed the person behind the title. Dean Treanor’s interests and pursuits outside his professional realm provided a well-rounded picture of his personality and values.

Profiles in Leadership | Joe Myers & Gary Gildin

In this episode of Penn State Dickinson Law’s “Profiles in Leadership” series, I had the pleasure of speaking with Joe Myers and my colleague Gary Gildin about the art of persuasion. Joe Myers is an award-winning filmmaker, an experienced designer, and an inventor. We explored the dynamics of persuading judges versus juries, debated whether truth is contingent upon the skill of the storyteller, and discussed practical ways to apply persuasion in both life and professional practice. We also delved into the role of persuasion in academic leadership, drawing on Gary’s experiences while serving as dean at Dickinson Law, and concluded with reflections on the future direction of persuasive strategies. The episode offers a fascinating exploration of how persuasion operates across the realms of filmmaking and law and underscores its significance in effective communication, storytelling, and professional life.
