The US Bar-European Patent Office (EPO) Liaison Council is a forum to facilitate exchange between the EPO and US applicants, who account for a quarter of EPO’s users, the largest number from any single country.
The Council represents IP law associations and IP sections of state bar associations from across the country. It increases mutual understanding of European and US patent practice and updates members on recent developments on both sides of the Atlantic.
Delighted to meet with members of the Council and elect our new Chair (Iris Mok, Intel), Vice-Chair (Laura Brutman, Banner Witcoff), and Enrica Bruno (Secretary, Steinfl + Bruno, LLP) this week.
It’s a wrap! University of Illinois Chicago’s Promotion and Tenure Committee completed meetings this week. The end of that meeting also marks the end of my three-year term. It’s been a pleasure and honor serving with my colleagues to recognize and reward the outstanding accomplishments of our colleagues across the university.

I had the privilege of sitting down with McAndrews, Held & Malloy, Ltd. Partner Dunstan Barnes and The American Bar Association Section of Intellectual Property Law’s #Design Rights Committee for a fireside chat on my recent Florida Law Review article “Saving Substantial Similarity.”
In a wide-ranging conversation, we discussed three lessons from design law’s Egyptian Goddess case for #copyright law, Senator Tillis’ recent proposal to establish a single IP agency and the importance of fostering intra-disciplinary conversations like this one. There is much that design law can teach the rest of IP and we have only just cracked the surface.

Please join us for our Music Copyright Conference on Friday, March 18, 2022!
In partnership with The George Washington University Law School, this conference builds on work done by its Music Copyright Infringement Resource and brings together academics, practitioners, musicologists, and theorists. This cross-pollination of ideas relating to national copyright regimes and musical expertise promises to spark new insights into adjudicating music infringement disputes, as well as those involving other genres of expression, in the U.S. and overseas.
You can find the agenda, list of speakers, and registration link here: https://bit.ly/3rnKvWJ. Looking forward to welcoming everyone!
The conference is free to attend but please register to receive a Remo link to the event.
If you need assistance with registration, don’t hesitate to contact my colleague Adam Ernette (aernette@uic.edu).
