Philly Meetings | IP & Innovation Vodcast and More

A busy two days of meetings in Philadelphia inviting speakers for the Penn State Dickinson Law IP and Innovation vodcast series that will launch in a few weeks and other initiatives to be announced. For now, stay tuned for news of my fireside chat with Roberte Makowski, Chief IP Counsel at FMC and Greg Mandel, Provost at Temple University!

A Sense of History | Philadelphia Dickinson Law Alum Reception

The Penn State Dickinson Law family gathered this week for the Philadelphia alum reception. A sense of history is palpable both in the city and at the reception. Founded in 1834, Dickinson Law alums trace their professional lineage to the oldest law school in Pennsylvania and the fifth oldest in the nation. Over six generations, or over 180 years, alums entrusted us with training the next.

One of the favorite parts of my job is the opportunity to meet alums. Over hugs, laughter, and warm conversation, they sometimes share how their time at Dickinson Law made a difference in their lives and how they, in turn, made a difference in the lives of others. That the ripples of regular and routine interactions with law students endure beyond the physical space of the law school, and the relatively short time we share there at once humbles and inspires. Tiny drops of knowledge, equity, and intentionality make a mighty ocean.

Vegas | Marcus Evans IP Law Summit

Pleased to be back in Vegas, this time to participate in the marcus evans Group IP Law Summit. Corporate counsel, government officials, outside counsel, and academics gathered to discuss a wide range of practical topics, including developing a “five-star” IP portfolio, strategic budgeting, fine-tuning cybersecurity and data privacy measures and navigating the European unitary patent and developments in China. Congratulations to Ashli Thomas, Antonio Vann and the Marcus Evans team for putting together an outstanding event.

Halozyme General Counsel Mark Snyder and I sat down for a fireside chat on IP leadership – within the corporation, in dealing with the government, and when thinking internationally. We also discussed the importance of working within coalitions such as the US IP Alliance and working with academia to advance data-driven analytics in areas like IP and antitrust law.

On the sidelines of the Summit, I was delighted to meet with UNLV Law Dean Leah Chan Grinvald. Dean Grinvald continues to be engaged with IP issues, having returned that same day from speaking at the IP Owners (IPO) Annual Meeting on the right to repair. We will reunite for my vodcast series on IP and innovation leadership profiles. Stay tuned!

Celebrate | Your Gift, Your Impact

Delighted to join the Penn State Dickinson Law community in celebrating its record-breaking $16.9 million campaign success. It was great to witness what a community can achieve with strong, multi-generational institutional leadership, staff, students, and faculty coming together to support their vision, and alums inspired by how they benefitted from their time at Dickinson Law and generously paying it forward.

GFIP 2022 | It’s a wrap!

Back from a whirlwind trip to Singapore. Thank you to the IP Office of Singapore for hosting my visit, and congratulations on another outstanding edition of the Global Forum on IP. The event shows how small states can make a large impact on the global dialogue on the most pressing issues of our time. Our discussions underscored the importance of making the IP system work for everyone, particularly those who have yet to enjoy its fruits, ensuring innovation policy remains relevant to disparate challenges like climate change and the metaverse, and the need to build trust and resilience in a fragmented and wary world.

GFIP 2022 | #presencematters

Delighted to catch up with fellow travelers from the US at the Global Forum on IP in Singapore.

As the world opens up for business again, it will be increasingly those who are present who will shape conversations on policy and operations and forge people-to-people ties for their organizations and countries.

Happy to see David Kappos (Cravath, Swaine & Moore LLP), Hon. Kathi Vidal (USPTO), and Etienne Sanz de Acedo (International Trademark Association (INTA)) made the trip to connect in person with the nearly 2,000 attendees, mostly from Asia, the world’s most dynamic region today, and their presence made a palpable difference.
