Delighted to help launch Penn State Dickinson Law’s inaugural Faculty Scholarship Exchange Initiative. The Initiative creates a platform to engage with scholars from a network of law schools across a significant segment of the United States. Together with my faculty and staff colleagues and our students, we welcomed Maurice A. Deane School of Law at Hofstra University Professor Alex Sinha, who delivered an eloquent and engaging presentation on “The End of Government Speech,” forthcoming in the Cardozo Law Review. My colleague Andrea Jane Martin will present “The Child Welfare System and Brackeen: State Legislatures and the Search for Better Outcomes” at the Hofstra Law Spring 2023 Faculty Workshop Series on April 12. We will be cheering her on from Carlisle!

After a long career in the private sector, Lisa Jorgenson took up leadership of World Intellectual Property Organization – WIPO’s #Patents and Technology Sector in 2020, overseeing an area that includes the administration of the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) – the International Patent System. Her appointment as the first female Deputy Director General of the Patents and Technology Sector has sent a powerful message about WIPO’s focus on #inclusivity. She has been a passionate advocate for women and for closing the gender gap in IP and technology for over 30 years. As a leader, Deputy Director General Jorgenson is deeply committed to advancing #women in innovative and creative sectors. Working towards a more balanced and #equitable IP landscape has been one of her top priorities. She joined me for a wide-ranging fireside to share her professional journey and lessons on leadership.

Law schools in Pennsylvania and its neighbors are natural partners underpinned by our deep historical and people-to-people ties. The Three Rivers Intellectual Property and Technology Law Colloquium exemplifies this close and collegial partnership. Named after the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers that meet to form the Ohio River in Pittsburg, scholars meet to share papers and projects at a working papers colloquium. Looking forward to reconnecting with my colleagues, learning about their latest work, and exploring new ways to collaborate.

Emory University’s strategic framework, #OneEmory: #EngagedforImpact, calls on its members to “foster a culture of eminence that attracts and inspires scholars of the highest order.” As the vice provost for faculty affairs from 2018 until 2022, Timothy Holbrook sat right in the middle of that work and prize, having charge of creating development opportunities for faculty in #leadership, #scholarship, and #teaching.
Professor Holbrook is an internationally recognized #patent law scholar. He frequently comments on #intellectualproperty law issues, appearing in various media, including CNN, The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, Fortune, Scientific American, and Science. He has also advocated for the rights of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (#LGBTQ) community. His commentary and op-eds on LGBTQ issues have appeared in various outlets, including CNN, the Wall Street Journal, the Atlanta-Journal Constitution, and Huffington Post. Professor Holbrook joined me for a wide-ranging fireside chat on his professional journey and lessons on leadership.

At The University of Nevada, Las Vegas, the “Rebels” nickname reflects the tenacious attitude and relentless spirit of a university and a community that dares to be different. It dates to the university’s origin in the mid-1950s, inspired by the idea of the iconic nonconformist. UNLV’s William S. Boyd School of Law is the first and only law school in Nevada.
During the search process, UNLV Law’s new Dean, Leah Chan Grinvald, articulated a clear vision for the future of Boyd Law that’s innovative, community-focused, and aspirational. Appointed in 2022, she joined me for a wide-ranging fireside chat to share reflections on her professional journey and lessons on leadership.

Founded as a night school in 1884, Temple University has evolved into an international powerhouse in higher education and a top-tier research institution with roughly 40,000 undergraduate, graduate and professional students. As the largest university in one of the nation’s most iconic cities, Temple educates diverse future leaders from across Philadelphia, the country and the world. The university’s motto is “Perseverance Conquers.”
Temple’s Board of Trustees unanimously confirmed Temple’s Provost Gregory Mandel on December 21, 2021. With the confirmation, Provost Mandel became the university’s chief academic officer and will oversee its broad portfolio, which includes 17 schools and colleges and various administrative offices. Mandel was a member of the Beasley School of Law faculty, including as dean. He joined me for a wide-ranging fireside chat to share reflections on his professional journey and lessons on leadership.
The United States needs a coherent, focused, and long-term national IP strategy. That strategy should cover four key areas – 1) enhancing national security and competitiveness, 2) ensuring how we encourage entrepreneurship and settle disputes remains fit for purpose, 3) fostering inclusive innovation, and 4) building a wellspring of strategic trust and effective means of coordination through coalitions and alliances.
To succeed, a national IP strategy will require bipartisan support undergirded by informed decision-making and a détente between groups focused on short-term sectarian interests. IP advocates must engage players whose incentives favor weak IP rights and convince them that undermining those rights cedes a key geostrategic advantage to its foreign rivals. Strong foreign policies begin at home. Like the benefits of free trade and globalization, IP has lost favor with many in the very nation that boldly championed them decades ago. Women, racial, and other traditionally neglected groups need to become IP’s champions, engage in its evolution, and in so doing, help ensure its longevity. The time for a national conversation on how IP can help America remain the leading voice in a multipolar world is now.
