Visit to the IP Office of Singapore

International surveys consistently rank Singapore’s IP regime as one of the best in the world, including the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness (3rd globally, top in Asia), the U.S. Chamber International IP Index (10th globally), the Bloomberg Innovation Index (6th globally), Global Innovation Index (8th globally, top in Asia).

This summer, I was privileged to have the opportunity to visit the IP Office of Singapore (IPOS), the government agency dedicated to growing innovative enterprises, and powering Singapore’s economy with ideas and innovation. Besides serving as Singapore’s registry for IP rights, IPOS also serves stakeholders through expertise and enterprise engagement.

IPOS has been making waves in the IP world under the leadership of Chief Executive Daren Tang and his team. In April, it started offering the world’s fastest patent application-to-grant for AI inventions. In June, Singapore was elected as Vice-Chair of the United Nations committee on patents. In August, IPOS introduced the world’s first trademark registration mobile app. It also recently collaborated with the World IP Organization to reduce copyright dispute mediation costs for the creative community. It was named Asia’s most innovative IP office and second in the world.

I met with senior and not-so-senior members of the IPOS team, learned about their work, and exchanged views on contemporary developments in the IP world. Thank you IPOS for a fruitful and memorable visit!
