Jeremy Sheff & Jocelyn Aqua | Trademarks & Information Privacy Law

Delighted to have Professor Jeremy Sheff (St. John’s University School of Law) and Ms. Jocelyn Aqua (PwC) speak to our Penn State Dickinson Law students recently.

Jeremy presented his insightful research, arguing that trademark law’s “use in commerce” concept has become increasingly muddled due to statutory ambiguities and judicial overreach. Recent Supreme Court decisions in Jack Daniel’s and Abitron reflect and deepen that confusion. Jeremy generously shared invaluable advice on writing and presenting from his own experience. You can read Jeremy’s article here: https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=4953805

Jocelyn masterfully explored how federal laws like the Freedom of Information Act and the Privacy Act balance government transparency with individual privacy, particularly regarding access to and disclosure of government-held personal records. She also spoke firsthand about her time in government and the private sector dealing with transnational privacy issues. Jocelyn was also a Penn Stater, graduating from Penn State University before doing her law degree at The George Washington University Law School.
