Profiles in Leadership | Georgetown Law Dean William Treanor
Delighted to sit down with Georgetown University Law Center Dean William M. Treanor for this episode of Penn State Dickinson Law‘s “Profiles in Leadership” series.
Our conversation began with the topic of “Intentionality in Physical Space.” Dean Treanor shared his vision for creating environments that do more than accommodate; they inspire. In “Building Community,” we discuss how community isn’t just about bringing people together; it’s about ensuring everyone feels valued and heard. “Keeping a Finger on the Pulse” highlighted his proactive approach to navigating challenges and opportunities.
“Bringing the DC Community into Georgetown Law” showcased the symbiotic relationship between the Law Center and the wider community. “Cross-Disciplinary Courses and Research; Promoting Public Service” reflected the innovative strides Georgetown Law has taken on interdisciplinary learning and law as a means to achieve justice.
Reflecting on his “Three Terms of Deaning at Georgetown Law,” Dean Treanor recounted the milestones of his tenure. “Avoiding Controversies; Keeping the Community Together” offered a peek into the challenges of leadership during a time of explosive social and political sensitivities. “What Does ‘Executive Vice-President’ Mean?” was an interesting discussion of organizational authority at Georgetown that I have not seen anywhere else.
Our conversation on “Teaching and Scholarship” and “Fathers of the Constitution: Triumph, Tragedy, and the Creation of the American Republic” allowed us to explore the theme of “dean as scholar.” Ending on a lighter note, “Life Outside the Law” revealed the person behind the title. Dean Treanor’s interests and pursuits outside his professional realm provided a well-rounded picture of his personality and values.
