Profiles in Leadership | Ivan Fong: The Lawyer Statesperson

Delighted to interview Ivan F., Executive Vice President, General Counsel, and Secretary of Medtronic.

Ivan leads Medtronic’s global legal, compliance, and government affairs teams. Recognized as one of “America’s 50 Outstanding General Counsels” and “Twenty Most Influential General Counsel” by The National Law Journal, Ivan guided CEOs, business leaders, and boards through complex legal and policy issues, fostering inclusive and diverse environments.

Before joining Medtronic, Ivan was the Chief Legal and Policy Officer at 3M, where he elevated the legal department to be named the “Best Legal Department / Legal Department of the Year” by The American Lawyer. His past roles include General Counsel of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Chief Legal Officer and Secretary of Cardinal Health, and Senior Counsel at GE. Ivan’s legal career started as a law clerk to distinguished judges, including Sandra Day O’Connor of the U.S. Supreme Court.

Ivan is also a champion of social impact. He sits on the board of Cboe Global Markets, is a member of the Council of The American Law Institute, and supports Equal Justice Works and Minnesota Public Radio.
